£20 MILLION FOR DARWEN
As MP for Rossendale and Darwen, I have secured £20 million of government investment for Darwen through the Pride in Place programme. That is £2 million every year, and how it is spent will be decided by local people, not Whitehall.
What Pride in Place means for Darwen
Pride in Place is a new way of organising investment into local communities with decisions led by you, Darreners, to best decide how it is spent on what matters most.
Extensive consultation has already been undertaken, highlighting eight key priorities:
- Improving the town centre and supporting local businesses
- Creating a safe, welcoming town centre
- Providing positive activities for young people
- Enhancing parks and green spaces
- Showcasing Darwen through music, arts and culture
- Supporting charities and community groups
- Helping manufacturing businesses stay competitive
- Removing barriers to skills training and access to jobs
This consultation is ongoing and will run throughout the 10-year programme, including via ‘Let’s Talk Darwen,’ a wide range of in-person and online opportunities for you to have your say, which will be promoted widely.
Delivering for Darwen
Darwen was one of the first 75 towns selected for this funding and a long-term plan, reflecting the eight priorities above, has just been agreed by Government.
While that was being finalised and reviewed, the Darwen Town Board has launched a pilot Darwen Community Fund which awarded more than £270,000 to 12 local projects, chosen from proposals by residents.
So far, funding has been granted to:
- Two Gates Bowling Green and Social Club
- Derwent Hall
- Darwen Heritage Centre
- Sunbird Records
- Darwen Cricket Club
- Darwen Youth Zone
- Junction 4 Skatepark
- Hoddlesden Millennium Green
- St James over Darwen
- The Making Rooms
- Launchpad
- Newrad Fisheries
