It was great to meet Janet King at the Antioch Christian Bookroom in Rawtenstall. It’s a lovely little shop selling books and fair trade goods. The shop is run by volunteers and all the proceeds go to local charities. I bought some very nice chocolate!

The UK’s gambling industry is a £15.6bn sector, and yet it pays only £2.5bn in tax. Gambling is taxed, in this country, far less than other high-profit industries. The harms and costs to health, to public services and to communities from gambling are well-known. Reports suggest that increased taxes on gambling operators could bring in £3bn, which would be enough to lift half a million children out of poverty without breaching the Chancellor’s fiscal rules or our manifesto promises.
That's why I signed this open letter calling for a targeted levy on online gambling to fund investment in tackling child poverty.
